God’s Giving Nature Shines Brightest On Easter

EasterWe don’t often think of Easter as the holiday of giving. Giving is most characterized by the Christmas season. We love giving presents to show those we love how much we care about them.

Are you one who loves to give? Have you ever wondered where that desire came from? Well, a starting point would direct us back to the time when the greatest gift ever given was bestowed on mankind.

I’m quite sure giving is a character quality God possesses Himself. He passed that gift down to mankind during the days of creation so many years ago. The book of Genesis describes how we are created in His image. So it would be logical to conclude that God passed on His giving nature to humanity during that creative process.

And then, one special time on the holiday we now call Easter, God showed us just how extreme a giver He can be.

God: The Extreme Giver

I think God is an extreme giver. How can I be so confident of that? It’s because of verses from the Bible, like the most famous one of all:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son; that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

We see in this verse that God gave. He didn’t receive or take anything from us. He gave something very valuable so that humanity would get the chance at a relationship with Him. It’s such a staggering concept – giving up your only Son to die for the sins of mankind. It hardly makes sense. Never could you or I have come up with this kind of plan to bridge the gap between God and man.

I get the sense when I read the Bible that God didn’t do this because He had to but because He wanted to out of His great love for us. It gave Him great joy to be able to offer this free gift in the way He did. It gives Him even greater joy when we choose to accept it.

Easter’s Special Meaning

On Easter, Christians celebrate the giving nature of God and the sacrifice His Son Jesus made for everyone for all time.

But even more than the sacrifice, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Easter. That event is the hinge point that sets Christianity apart from any other religion. The man Jesus who claimed to take away sins has demonstrated victory over sin and death by rising from the grave. It’s not myth – He is alive today and ready to accept all who look to receive him.
