This Little Light of Mine

CandleHidden Nuggets Series #1

Have you ever lost your way? I have on more than one occasion, including this past year while writing for Luke1428. Unintentionally, I strayed from the vision that sparked the purchase of this domain name in early 2012.

It started sometime this past January when I began to incorporate less and less of a spiritual perspective in my writing. My vision for Luke1428 had been to share what God had revealed to me about money and personal finance through my reading of the Bible. It’s littered all through the Bible’s pages, really valuable and practical applications that anyone, religious or not, could appreciate.

I started out gangbusters on that vision.

I ended blog year #1 fizzling out on it.

It wasn’t intentional. I never forgot that was my goal. However, I began to understand that my knowledge and writing passions extended beyond the scope of just discussing Biblical related topics. That was a breakthrough development that I think has been profitable for me and those who read here. I don’t regret that realization or anything I’ve written here. But, in the excitement of this discovery, I swayed too far in this new direction and temporarily lost sight of why I had begun Luke1428 in the first place.

I began to perceive this shift in March and, for the last three months, I’ve been processing how to put that vision back together and incorporate it with my newfound writing passions. I believe that Luke1428 can and should incorporate both viewpoints – the spiritual and the secular. The weekly “Hidden Nuggets” series is going to be my outlet and attempt to bring balance to the forces pulling me in each direction.

On Sundays I’ll be writing brief (not as long as this post) devotional/inspirational posts stemming from my reading of the Bible. Many of them will be in relation to money and personal finance as that is the point of this site. But I’ll be delving into other life issues as well, sharing what I think God happens to be teaching me in the moment.

This episode has reminded me of the children’s song I frequently bellowed out as a kid in Sunday School  – “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…” The words are pulled from the following Bible verse:

“No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. (Luke 11:33)

God lit a fire in my heart to express in writing the thoughts about money I was gaining from reading his Word. For a time, that vision was positioned on the lampstand, shining bright. The sad thing is those were in the early days of my blog when only the crickets were reading. Once the traffic started coming, somebody slid the lamp beneath the basket and only brought it out on occasion, when it was convenient.

That someone would have been me.

I encourage all my blogging friends to evaluate your mission. Are you sticking to it? Clearly my site began an evolution and was slowly progressing away from the original intent. By grappling with this issue now, instead of ignoring it, I believe Luke1428 will be a better place going forward.

How do you get back on track when you realize you have strayed from a goal? Have you ever “hidden” your faith because you were scared of what others might think?

  1. Saw this link on twitter this morning and I’m grateful for this reminder. I just started a blog in April – my story of financial and spiritual debt – and I’ve already become frustrated with the balance of the scales tipping mostly toward financial posts. And, as with any topic in a Christian’s life, there is no need to separate the issue from our walk. Just what I needed to “hear” this morning 🙁

    • Thanks for stopping by Kirsten and welcome to the blogging world. 🙂 I’d encourage you not to be overly frustrated with the topics leaning in one direction or another. The big deal is just to continue to write. It took me about six months to find “my voice” and what worked for me. If you can make it until then, you’ll have a good idea of where your blog is headed. I’m not an expert by any means but if you need any blogging advice along the way feel free to ask.
