Launching This Year May Lead to Your Greatest Catch

Hidden Nuggets Series #72 – “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” – Luke 5:4

fisherman casting a netThe shallow, clear blue waters of the Caribbean are so inviting. In them you can wade a great distance from shore and never feel uncomfortable. Every step is sure because you are only in up to your knees and all obstacles can be avoided because you can clearly see the ocean floor.

Were you to wade out into deep waters however, the feeling of security would clearly change.

Deep waters are scary.

They are expansive and wide.

There are unseen objects in the deep.

There is little light to manage the obstacles.

Yet there can be great reward in launching into something big…something challenging…something overwhelming…something fraught with uncertainty.

Simon Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples learned this on one occasion. After a night of fishing without catching a thing, Jesus asked him to launch his boat one more time and let down his net. After some mild complaining, Peter reluctantly obeyed.

The Result of Peter’s Launch

A few moments into his launch and subsequent release of his net into the water, Peter’s net was miraculously filled with so many fish it began to break. A miracle to be sure!

But it shows there’s reward potential for those who launch.

In the process of launching, Peter also learned to let go.

The dropping of the net is symbolic of letting go. Those who have ever fished know how frustrating it can be. You know where the fish are, what type of bait to use, and how to reel them in once they strike the hook.

However, once that lure goes into the water the fisherman is at the mercy of the fish. Unless they choose to bite he won’t catch anything. Ever had a fishing trip like that? Frustrating…

It’s a two-step process really. The fisherman has to launch in order to realize a gain but he also must be willing to let go, be patient and trust the process. There will be times and seasons where he won’t catch fish and other times when he will.

And unless he shows some persistence through the hard times he won’t reap the rewards that might come from casting his net one more time.

Is there a voice inside pushing you to start something today?

Launch your net out into the deep unknown. Trust in God who knows the process and see what’s in store.

Are you being prodded to launch something? What’s holding you back? Are you having difficulty letting go and trusting in God for the outcome?

Brian, with God, we not only find joy but also security. So whatever we’re planning to risk, as long as we have God “on our side”, we will achieve victory. This is what is promised by God, and words to live by.

  2. This is beautiful and so many of us don’t want to launch in the deep. What are we waiting for?

  3. I think a lot of hesitaion is borne out a fear of failure. But as C.S. Lewis once said: “Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement.”

  4. The timing of your post can’t be coincidental, can it? Yesterday I read a Facebook message from a friend who is now raising her grandson. She wrote about the circumstances of when he came to live with them two years ago and her struggle with God about taking on the responsibility. Her husband had just been elected as a state official a few weeks earlier, and now they were taking on the role of parents to a 4-year-old. As she wrote, “I know there is someone out there needing to take a leap of faith about something in their lives and they are afraid. Do it anyway…don’t just stick your toes in the water…dive in! I am not promising it will be easy, it won’t. But, oh, the rewards! Take that leap of faith…go ahead…dive in…the water feels fine!”

    • That’s a powerful testimony Karen. I’ve felt that same reluctance to dive in many times in my life. Thanks for sharing that encouragement.
