May Goals Update – School’s Out For Summer Edition

For those of you that think teaching is easy, think again.

Sleeping Student

Teacher job #206 – wake the sleeping student

It’s true that teaching can be a very rewarding profession but at times it’s a real grind. Staying on schedule and keeping the kids motivated all year can be a real challenge. A teacher also has to handle student discipline issues, meet with concerned parents and help with extracurricular projects assigned by the school. And that’s not to mention all the outside the classroom work teachers need to do to prepare quality lessons and grade papers. That usually takes up our evenings and weekends.

Teachers pack so much effort into their 9-10 month school schedule. We need a break just to recharge for the next year. That’s why the four most beautiful words a teacher hears (next to “You’re getting a raise”) are, “School’s out for summer!”

Cue Alice Cooper.

Now on with my goal update for the month of May…

Goal #1: Read through the entire New Testament of the Bible and the book of Proverbs by May 31st.

Finished. Completed this yesterday by reading the final chapter of Proverbs. It’s an awesome chapter in the Bible that describes the characteristics of a godly wife. I’m so thankful that I have someone like this with which to share my life.

Goal #2: Pay off our mortgage debt by the end of the year.

Postponed. I wrote a post last week that outlined why I had to let go of this goal. You can read about that here.

Goal #3: To support Mrs. Luke1428 as she obtains her CPA license and MBA by December, 2013

Mrs. Luke1428 is getting really close to finishing the necessary coursework to get her CPA license. The current set of classes she is taking will be completed in July and that will be it for the CPA part.

Goal #4: To run a half-marathon in under 2 hours, a full marathon in under 4 hours and run 1,000 miles for the year.

I finished part one of this goal on March 17th with a time of 1:46 minutes.

I ran 60.5 miles in May. That puts me at 331 miles for the year. I’ve been doing more runs (9 runs in the last 13 days) at shorter lengths to get my body ready for the marathon training schedule I will start in June. I will basically be running five days a week with one day of cross training and one day of rest.

My running goal for June will be about 100 miles so we’ll see.

Goal #5: Redo the Luke1428 blog design by August, 2013.

When you come back next week to read my blog don’t be surprised when you see a new theme and design. I’ve waited almost a year before moving forward with this for several reasons. I’ll be writing next week about the change and my expectations going forward.

Goal #6: Join a local running club by March.

Finished.

Thought I would end this update with some unusual search terms that have come through my blog in the last 30 days. I’ve seen many other blogs do this and I think they are a hoot every time I read them.

Bible verse for the honeycomb for giving tithes – I love Honeycombs for breakfast. Just add milk. Don’t put them in the offering plate though.

all work and no play makes jack a dull boy – Scariest…movie…ever! REDRUM.

following my dreams ruined my life – Yikes! Hope I helped.

do horse have nerds – Paging Mr. Ed.

jesucristo libertad – Sí lo hace.

aint nobody got time for that sermon – Don’t tell the preacher that.

That’s it for now. Have a great weekend!

My sister was a teacher and I’m pretty sure she’d agree that those were 4 of her favorite words too!! Enjoy your summer break! It sounds like you have lots to keep you busy – 100 miles. Whew. Makes me feel like a slacker, but I’m not training for a marathon. Now, I’m sounding defensive! 🙂 I’m glad Mrs. Luke 1428 is getting closer to earning her CPA. A huge accomplishment and I’m happy she’s closing in on the finish line. Have a great weekend!

    • Thanks Shannon! The funny thing is in two weeks my kids will probably be bored and ready to go back to school. It will be a busy summer with vacations, the marathon training and devoting more time to blogging activities. Need to take advantage of this time to learn more and get better.

Seems like you have a great design as is–can’t wait to see the improvement! Best of luck.

Looks like you’re doing great on your goals! My youngest brother just graduated with his teaching degree and landed a job this week, so I’ll be interested to see what he thinks about it. Looking forward to seeing the redesign! I am getting Frugal Rules redesigned myself and it should be done here in the next couple of months.

    • Cool! You are doing great with your site! I’m going with one of the more popular themes from StudioPress. Going to be real basic and I think fun to work on a little at a time. I really want to learn more in year two of my blogging adventure about site design, SEO, advertising, etc. I have a whole list of stuff to do.

I can personally attest to the fact that horses do indeed have nerds, just ask our horses. :-). Great job on your goals, Brian! And big congrats to Mrs. luke1428 on finishing up that CPA license!

    • Thanks Laurie. I’ll pass on the congrats to the Mrs. It has been a long haul the last several years getting to this point. Nice to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
