Remembering Boston & A 2013 Goals Update

Boston Marathon BombingHow do you respond when the atmosphere of an innocent event designed to celebrate the human spirit is shattered in a violent moment and people’s lives are turned into a nightmarish hell?

We rush to help however we can. We cry with those in pain. We give of your time and resources to those in need. We never forget.

And we move on with life. We do not let evil believe it has taken our will and our desire for freedom. We stand together. And we speak out like elite American runner Patrick Rizzo did, who when asked if he was worried about running in the London Marathon a few weeks after Boston, had this to say…

“It didn’t deter me one bit…In those sorts of situations, whether it’s an act of domestic or foreign terrorism, the idea behind that is to alter your lifestyle and tap into submission. They picked the most stubborn group of people possible [runners] to try to do that to. We put ourselves in pain for pleasure.” (ESPN – “London Shows Solidarity With Boston”)

We will keep running. We will move forward more resolute than ever before.

Can’t believe it is May already. Several of my goals have come to a close while others are still moving along well. Here’s how I’m doing.

Goal #1: Read through the entire New Testament of the Bible and the book of Proverbs by May 31st.

I have Revelation and Proverbs to read. Once chapter per day of each book and I will have finished this goal by the end of May.

Goal #2: Pay off our mortgage debt by the end of the year.

Still behind on this goal due to the expenditures we incurred through our rental business the last two months. The money we had been drawing on from the business to pay for our mortgage was spent on property upgrades. Any rents due in the coming months will go towards building our emergency cash position, not paying down our mortgage.

Honestly, I don’t see a path to how this can be accomplished by the end of this year and will probably reevaluate this goal during the month of May.

Goal #3: To support Mrs. Luke1428 as she obtains her CPA license and MBA by December, 2013

TAX SEASON IS OVER! Can I get an AMEN!

What a relief to be done with that. Now our focus can turn in force to the completion of classes for the CPA licensure. Those classes should be done in July. Getting so close!

Goal #4: To run a half-marathon in under 2 hours, a full marathon in under 4 hours and run 1,000 miles for the year.

I finished part one of this goal on March 17th with a time of 1:46 minutes.

I ran 72.9 miles in April. That puts me at 270 miles for the year.

Goal #5: Redo the Luke1428 blog design by August, 2013.

I’m getting antsy to get started on this. School is almost over and I’ve done a great deal of research on the premium theme I’m going to purchase. So expect some changes to the blog look in the coming weeks.

I’ll also be writing soon about the changeover and my expectations going forward as I close in on my one-year blogging anniversary in July.

Goal #6: Join a local running club by March.

Finished.

I was very happy that our local club decided to do a memorial 10K run in remembrance of those killed and injured in the Boston Marathon. We had several members from our club participate in the marathon and all were uninjured. This turned out to be a nationwide phenomenon as many clubs held similar events.

That’s it for now. Have a great weekend!

  1. Congrats on your goals and the running time!!! Glad to hear the wife is done with tax season as well!

  2. That is a really great quote. I am excited to see where the blog design goes.

  3. I share Laurie’s sentiment, great quote from Rizzo. It’s true – we runners are a stubborn lot and endure a lot of pain too. 🙂 And a big AMEN for Mrs. Luke 1428 for surviving tax season! Looking forward to the redesign – I’m probably going to change things up a bit this Fall too. You’re doing great with your goals too!

    • Thanks Shannon! My changes won’t be too dramatic. I’m just going to do away with this free theme and become more focused on growing the blog. That’s going to be one of my goals for year #2.

LOVE the quote from Patrick Rizzo – so true! Brian, you are doing great on your goals – congrats, and keep up the good work!
