Marathon Training and Writing Mental Blocks

Marathoner grabbing waterI’ve heard it said that a runner is not ready for the next marathon until they have forgotten the last one. Whether that is true or not I don’t know. I have not forgotten much about my first marathon last October through the streets of Atlanta. Pretty painful after mile 22. Yet here I find myself beginning training again for another October run. I must be a glutton for punishment.

This time I will be traversing the streets of Baltimore on Saturday, Oct. 12th. My goal is to run the marathon in under four hours. To do that I will have to shave about 9 minutes off my time from Atlanta. I think that is a doable goal but it will still be a great challenge for me.

I’ve been running consistently all year but my official training schedule for the marathon started this past week. To meet my goal I’m putting some extra effort into my training sessions. Here is what I’m doing.

I’ve added some light weight training on the days I have easy runs scheduled. I’m also doing some more cross training, working out on an exercise bike one day a week. In all, I’ll be working out six days a week and running over 500 miles during the training schedule.

I mentioned Wednesday some of the reasons why I enjoy running. One of those reasons relates to this space at Luke1428, in that running helps me think of ideas to write about. I have also found that I have worked through many mental blocks in my writing while I’m on a run. I will have been thinking about a topic for some time but can’t quite develop it cleanly enough.

Working through a mental block is something I’m sure every writer can relate to. Sometimes I just get stuck and it’s very frustrating to sit there, staring at your computer screen for hours trying to grind through a post. So I’m interested in how you deal with mental blocks.   1. I find that running helps me think of new ideas all the time. At the very least I can think of a million ways “training” for something is like paying down debt, or saving, or goal setting, etc. 🙂 that’s always a good fall back. Good luck with your training. I’m doing some pavement runs while I’m back in Detroit and while 6 miles is easy for me in the sand, it hurts like hell on pavement. ouch!

    • I have found that out as well. Many ideas have come to me on a run…I just have to remember them when I get done. I would love to be able to run in the sand or perhaps on trails from time to time to relieve some of the strain on my legs. The nearest good trails from me are on the north side of Atlanta about an hour away.

    Good luck on your training! I have no doubt you can shave 9 minutes off of your time. For me, when I get writer’s block, I find talking it through with someone can help. Often times, when I talk to Tanya (she helps me with The Heavy Purse) she can help me breakthrough my mental block.

    • That’s a good suggestion Shannon. Often times we rely too much on our own thought process so it’s always good to get a fresh angle from someone else. I need to do that more often.

    Thanks so much for the mention Brian, I really appreciate it! Writer’s block is something I definitely deal with. Sometimes I just have to get up and leave the computer behind and do something else. I also find that listening to music can help at times.

    • You bet John! I enjoy listening to music as well. But I can’t really do podcasts where people are speaking. I can’t focus on what I’m writing and what they are saying at the same time. My wife though can listen to podcasts all day long while she is doing work and it doesn’t bother her.

    Thanks for the mention Brian, I really appreciate it. As for running a Marathon that would have to be painful, I use to run cross country back in high school and I could barely handle the 5k. After running a marathon though a 5k probably looks pretty easy though. Have a great weekend.

    • You’re welcome Chris. I would say a 5k is easy to run but I’m not sure I could do it really fast. A 5k is basically a sprint and I train a bit differently for a long race. The winners of the 5ks I’ve been in are finishing in 16 or 17 minutes. No way I can run that fast!
